How long they remained there on the stone floor holding one another, no one could say. But at last Elspeth peered around anxiously, suddenly aware of the terrible stench of blood and burned flesh. “We must get away from here, darling,” she said, lifting them to their feet. She anxiously looked out at the road, the jungle, the sky. What now? She had no idea. “But where can we go?”

Vijaya raised her head from Elspeth’s shoulder. “I know.”

In the branches overhead, langur monkeys leaped and chatter-barked at them. Now Vijaya had taken the lead, and Elspeth’s hand, leading her deeper into the jungle. “Where are we going?” she asked.

“We are following my tiger.” Vijaya smiled, as if this were the most natural explanation in the world.

Elspeth went along in a daze, her exhaustion finally taking its toll. This is a dream, she thought, too much laudanum elixir.

“Bahanji, trust me a little longer. We are nearly there. Pray to the moon now. She is a goddess and understands. She smiles on lovers and thieves, and those who must travel by night.”

Elspeth smiled at the thought.

She was very nearly asleep on her feet when Vijaya whispered into her ear. “Beloved, look—we are here.”

She focused her bleary eyes on great masonry blocks, stone turrets adorned with intricate pendants and finials. They had arrived at the ruins of a temple courtyard adjoining an enormous pool of water ringed with fragrant pale lotus flowers. The crumbling stone walls were clutched by banyan tree roots and overgrown with flowered garlands of creeping liana vines, but on their ancient panels, bas-relief gods and nymphs could still be seen coupling in series of acrobatic exuberance. Night-blooming jasmine perfumed the air. Tiny frogs and cicadas serenaded them. Twilight was dyeing the sky, from cerulean to peacock teal to star-studded indigo. Above it all, the silver-tinged ring of the moon shone like a diamond necklace. “A honey-scented love-bower…” Elspeth marveled.

“Come,” said Vijaya, pulling her by the hand with a smile.

The moon waited for them in the water, beckoning them to join her. They undressed and hand in hand, lightly stepped down the flights of baked brick steps into the cool water. This must be how the selkie felt, Elspeth thought, throwing off her human shape to return home.

They laughed and squealed; it felt delicious to wash off the sweat, grime and oil. Elspeth watched as Vijaya wiped the excess water from her face, then met her gaze with a coy half-smile. Treading water, they drew closer to each other, reaching out to touch fingertips, then grasp hands. They pulled one another in close until their hungry bodies touched; then tentatively, slowly, leaned in until their lips met as well. Elspeth felt dizzy, electrified, transcendent, and kissed her with a passion she scarcely knew was possible.

They released hands to embrace each other all the tighter; Elspeth clasped Vijaya’s sweet face with both hands to kiss her, and Vijaya in turn wrapped her arms around Elspeth and held her tight.
